Sliema Wanderers sack Stephen Azzopardi

Sliema Wanderers are set to appoint a new coach after deciding to sack Stephen Azzopardi.

Despite an intensive transfer campaign this summer, the Blues were a major disappointment in the Premier League so far. They are currently in fifth place, eleven points behind joint-leaders Birkirkara and Valletta, after losing seven out of the fourteen matches played.

Azzopardi had joined Sliema in November 2007, replacing Ray ‘Zazu’ Farrugia. Since then he led the Blues to winning the U*BET FA Trophy in May 2009 and the BOV Super Cup in August 2009. Azzopardi had earlier coached Balzan Youths and Birkirkara. With the Stripes, he won one Premier League championship, three FA Trophies and five Super Cups, among other major honours.
