UEFA Regions Cup: Tough draw for Malta

The Malta Amateur national team is in for difficult matches in the Intermediate Round of the UEFA Regions Cup 2010/11 after being drawn in Group 1 with the teams representing Germany, Greece and Spain. The draw of the preliminary and intermediate round was held at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon on Friday.

The team representing Spain in the last edition – Castilla y León, won the last final tournament which was held in Croatia.

Thirty-nine UEFA member associations have entered the competition. All entrants will be regional selections who win a national qualifying competition with the exception of Malta and San Marino, who enter national amateur teams. All qualifying groups are played as one-venue mini-tournaments from next autumn.

After qualifying from the preliminary round and also thanks to the fact that Malta was always present in previous editions of the competition, this time the locals will enter the competition in the intermediate round.

Malta will be hosting Group 1 sometime between August and December.

The eight intermediate round group winners will progress to the final tournament scheduled for summer 2011, with the hosts picked from among the qualifiers.
