St. Andrews regain sole leadership

Centenary StadiumSt. Andrews regained sole leadership on top the BOV Second Division table thanks to a 2-0 win over Mellieha on Saturday.

Nicky Vella Petroni and Anatole Debono scored the goals for Wayne Attard’s side.

The Saints lead the way with 30 points, two ahead of Lija Athletic and Gzira United and six ahead of Birzebbuga St. Peter’s.

St. Andrews and Lija face each other in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday. The two teams are still unbeaten after twelve matches.

Thanks to a goal by James Tabone, Gzira United defeated Senglea Athletic 1-0 in another match on Saturday.

On Sunday, Rabat Ajax and St. Venera Lightnings returned to winning ways.

Rabat scored three in the last eleven minutes of the first half to beat Gharghur 3-0. Justin Felice, Adam Smeir and Alan Zahra did the job for the Magpies.

In another match, St. Venera Lightnings defeated Gozo 3-1. Mark Grech put St. Venera ahead, Mario Azzopardi levelled matters but goals by Alistair Camilleri and Max Ebejer gave the Saints the three points.

Mellieha and Zebbug are joint-fifth on 14 points, followed by Rabat and Senglea on 13, St. Venera 12, Zurrieq 11, Gozo and Gharghur 5.
