St. George's win Cottonera derby — Fine win for Melita

Vittoriosa Stars failed to extend the lead on top the BOV First Division table after losing 1-2 to St. George’s in the Cottonera derby. Marsaxlokk, on the other hand, regained the top spot after beating Pietà Hotspurs.

In the Cottonera derby, Joseph Chetcuti put Vittoriosa ahead on 32 minutes but Josef Dalli levelled matters on 55 minutes. Four minutes later, Gordon Mallia notched the winner for the Cospicua side.

On Sunday, goals by Leighton Grech, Malcolm Licari and David Carabott gave Marsaxlokk a 3-0 win over Pietà Hotspurs. The Southseasiders lead the way, one point ahead of Vittoriosa.

After two successive defeats to St. Patrick and Marsaxlokk, Melita returned to winning ways on Friday as they defeated Balzan Youths 3-0. George Gribbon and a brace by Tobias Terpougoff did the job for the Amateurs.

In other matches, St. Patrick collected three precious points in a 2-1 win over Mosta while San Gwann came back from two goals down to hold Mqabba in a 2-2 draw.

Marsaxlokk lead with 24 points, followed by Vittoriosa on 23, Balzan and St. George’s on 19, Mosta 14, Melita and St. Patrick 13, Mqabba 10, Pietà 9 and San Gwann 7.
