BOV Division 2: Lija close in on St. Andrews

Lija Athletic moved just one point behind leaders St. Andrews after defeating Gzira United in a match from the BOV Second Division on Sunday.

The clash between Lija and Gzira put against each other the teams lying in second and third place and with this win over the Maroons, Lija and St. Andrews are now even closer to promotion considering that they enjoy a seven and an eight-point lead respectively over the third-placed team.

Antoine Sacco put Lija ahead but Richard Attard levelled matters for Gzira. Four minutes from time, Gzira goalie Roderick Debattista was sent off and since they had already performed the three substitutions, the goalkeeper had to be replaced by a player. From the penalty spot, Keith Darmanin converted.

Lija therefore narrowed the gap at the top to just one point after St. Andrews were held in a 2-2 draw by Gozo FC on Friday.
