Malta international striker Daniel Bogdanovic turned down an offer by League Championship side Barnsley to sign a new contract. This could lead him to join another club this summer.

Barnsley have admitted that they are unable to meet Bogdanovic’s wage demands. Tykes director Don Rowing says it would be wrong for the club to jeopardise their financial security for the sake of one player.

According to reports on skysports.com and teamtalk.com, quoting a report in The Star, Rowing said, “Daniel refused a very good contract. We’ve reviewed our offer more than once, but Daniel didn’t want to sign it.”

“It is disappointing. He wants more money than we are prepared to offer at this stage. We have to be prudent; at no stage would we compromise the position of the club.”

“Daniel has done really well and scored some important goals, but the deal has to be right for both parties.”

The club, however, remains hopeful of agreeing terms with the striker who is the club’s leading scorer with fifteen goals.

“The Football League recommend that we should tell players where they stand by the third week in May, so we’ve still got plenty of time to sort things out,” added Rowing.

Bogdanovic’s goals helped Barnsley secure their Championship status although the team disappointed in recent outings.

“The supporters here at Barnsley are just fantastic and they have really helped us this season. I know we have given them a lot to shout about this year even though they are as frustrated as us with the way things have gone in the last month or so. We want to push on hard in these last two matches for them,” said Bogdanovic.

Three other Championship clubs are believed to have enquired about his services.

Bogdanovic signed for Barnsley in January 2009, joining the club from Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Sofia.

In Malta, Bogadanovic played for Sliema Wanderers, Naxxar Lions, Valletta, Marsaxlokk and Ghajnsielem in Gozo but had short spells with Vasas SC in Hungary, Cherno More Varna in Bulgaria and one year with Cisco Roma in Italy.
