Qormi seek win in bid to secure third place

Qormi will be all out for the three points on Saturday as they take on Tarxien Rainbows in a clash from the Championship Pool between two teams who already made an important achievement this season by securing a top-six finish after avoiding relegation at the end of last season.

After spending most of the first phase in the first or second place, Qormi now stand a good chance of placing third. Placing third no longer guarantees participation in UEFA competitions but should Valletta miss out on the Premier League title and win the U*BET FA Trophy, then the team placing third would still make it to the UEFA Europa League.

The team led by Vince Carbonaro and Jesmond Zerafa currently shares the third place with Sliema Wanderers on 27 points. Over this week-and-a-half, they face Tarxien, Valletta and then Sliema. A win over Tarxien on Saturday would put Qormi three points clear of Sliema, before they take on Valletta and Sliema face Hibernians. The direct clash would then decide the issue.

Qormi are coming from a 1-3 defeat to Birkirkara in their last outing but in the previous two matches, they registered comfortable wins over Sliema and Hibernians.

The Rainbows, on the other hand, are coming from two successive defeats, losing 0-3 to Valletta and 0-2 to Sliema. They currently share the fifth place with Hibernians on 17 points.

The two teams met three times this season. Qormi registered a 2-1 win in the first round, Tarxien won 2-0 in the second while the third round clash ended in a 2-0 win for Qormi.

Meanwhile in a match from the Relegation Pool, Floriana take on Dingli Swallows.

Dingli defeated Floriana 1-0 in the first round but then Floriana registered two wins over the Swallows – 2-0 and 3-0.
