Malta to play friendly matches against Azerbaijan

Malta will be playing two friendly matches against Azerbaijan – one at home and another one in the capital on Azerbaijan in Baku. This was announced by the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan on Thursday.

Malta will host the former Soviet republic on November 17 and then travel to Baku for another game on August 10, 2011.

The two countries met three times. Malta hosted Azerbaijan in a friendly match in April 1994, winning 5-0. Malta then defeated Azerbaijan 3-0 in the Rothmans Tournament in February 2000 and two years later, in April 2002, Malta defeated Azerbaijan 1-0 in another friendly match.

Malta is due to play two friendly matches against Germany on May 13 in Aachen and then FYR Macedonia on August 11 at Ta’ Qali before the first EURO 2012 qualifiers which get underway next season. The first games for John Buttigieg’s side are in September against Israel away from home and Latvia at Ta’ Qali. Two away matches are then in programme in October – against Georgia and Croatia.
