St. Patrick relegated to Division 2 after penalty shoot-out

St. Patrick were relegated to Division 2 after losing to Pietà Hotspurs on penalties in a relegation decider at the Hibs Stadium on Saturday. The two teams had ended their commitments in joint-eighth place in the BOV First Division.

Quelin Refalo put the Hotspurs ahead during the first half after converting a penalty but Simon Zerafa scored another penalty to level matters for the Saints after the break. Refalo was then sent off for Pietà.

With the score 1-1, the game went into extra-time. No goals were scored but Matthew Fleri Soler was sent off for the Zabbar side.

Penalties therefore had to decide the issue. Simon Zerafa’s effort was parried by the Pietà goalkeeper, Glanville Goodlip scored (PH 1-0 SP), Alex Ellul scored (PH 1-1 SP), Sheldon Grech scored (PH 2-1 SP), Steven Dimech scored (PH 2-2 SP), Karl Sammut hit wide, Ryan Mifsud scored (PH 2-3 SP), Sharlon Pace scored (PH 3-3 SP), Bronwen Bugeja’s effort was once again saved by the Pietà goalkeeper (PH 3-3 SP) and the last penalty was converted by Benjamin Perry-Acton (PH 4-3 SP).
