Lija Athletic secured promotion to Division 1 as they returned to winning ways, beating Gharghur 4-1 in a match from the BOV Second Division on Sunday. This result also condemned Gharghur to Division 3.

Marco Gerada’s side leads the way with 45 points, five ahead of St. Andrews and Gzira United. The Saints, however, have a game in hand. Gzira joined St. Andrews in second place thanks to a 2-1 win over Birzebbuga St. Peter’s on Saturday.

Meanwhile in the battle to avoid tenth place and hence a place in the play-offs, Zurrieq held Mellieha in a goalless draw while Zebbug Rangers registered a most comfortable 7-1 win over Gozo FC.

Zebbug and Zurrieq are joint-sixth on 26 points, followed by Rabat on 24, Senglea on 22 and St. Venera on 21. The latter three teams will be in action on Monday.

St. Venera take on St. Andrews while Senglea Athletic face Rabat Ajax. For St. Andrews, a win would put them one point away from promotion.
