Qormi, Tarxien target historic final

Qormi and Tarxien Rainbows will be all out to secure a place in the final of the U*BET FA Trophy for the first time in the history of the respective club as the two teams cross swords in the second semi-final on Tuesday. A historic final which would crown a historic season for both sides after both managed to secure a top-six finish this season.

Reaching the semi-finals was already a first for both sides. Both teams entered the competition in the first round. Qormi defeated two First Division sides in the first two rounds – Mqabba 3-0 and St. Patrick 5-1. In the quarter-finals, they beat Hibernians 5-4 after the penalty shoot-out. Tarxien, on the other hand, beat Mosta 5-1, Floriana 4-1 after extra-time and Balzan Youths 2-0.

Qormi and Tarxien met four times this season. Qormi defeated Tarxien 2-1 in the first round and 2-0 in the third round. The Rainbows won 2-0 in the second round and 3-2 in the fourth round.

Both sides will be unable to field their best formation as Tarxien defender Lee Galea and Qormi striker Alfred Effiong are ruled out through suspension. However Tarxien are expected to welcome back Anderson Mendes Ribeiro from an injury.

In this semi-final, extra-time will be played if necessary and if the result is still draw, penalty kicks shall be taken in accordance with The Laws of the Game.

The winner will be facing Valletta in Sunday’s final.
