André Schembri rewarded with a new contract at Ferencváros

André Schembri has put pen to paper on an extended contract at Ferencváros Football Club that will keep the Maltese midfielder at the Hungarian top division club until the end of the 2010/11 season.

Schembri became the club’s second Maltese signing in quick succession, when he teamed up with compatriot Justin Haber. The Maltese international goalkeeper recently transferred from partner club Sheffield United, also signed a contract with Fradi for the 2010/11 season.

André Schembri, the 24-year-old attacking midfielder, has earned high recognition as a key player for Malta. Having gained his first cap against Japan, back in June 2006, Schembri has scored three goals for his country.

Since Schembri’s move from SK Austria Kärnten, he has established himself as an important member of the Ferencváros squad. As his fitness levels increased, he started to make a significant impact during the second half of Fradi’s spring campaign. Schembri’s attacking style and his man-of-the-match performance against Diosgyor FC has seen him quickly become a favourite with the fans.

Schembri said: “I am so pleased to be presented this new contract as I’m really enjoying my time here.
“There is an exciting expectation at Ferencváros. It is a great experience for me to play at this magnificent football club alongside some very talented players. The relationship I enjoy with our fans has made it even more special.”

Dave McCarthy, joint Managing Director at Ferencváros, said: “André was a player we monitored for some time, thanks to our growing connections with Malta. He is a player of great promise and we want him to fulfil that potential at Ferencváros. His performances this season have been rewarded by this extended contract.”
