Euro Cup at stake this evening

The first honour of the season 2010/11 will be at stake on Friday as Sliema Wanderers take on Valletta in the third and final match of the Euro Cup.

Both sides defeated champions Birkirkara in the first two matches. The Wanderers registered a 3-1 win on Monday while the Citizens beat the Stripes 3-0 on Wednesday. Therefore a draw would be enough for Valletta to lift the cup as they have a better goal-difference.

Sliema, on the other hand, have to win in order to finish on top of the table. This would be the eighth Euro Cup win and the first since 2005. Sliema actually won the Euro Cup four times and the Lowenbrau Cup three times. Valletta, on the other hand, won the Euro Cup three times and the Lowenbrau Cup six times – the last time being ten years ago. The Lowenbrau Cup replaced the Euro Cup between 1993 and 2003.

Valletta could have Nigerian midfielder Omonigho Temile making his debut. The 25-year old is the older brother of Frank Temile who two years ago left Valletta to join Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine.

Gilbert Agius is in doubt for the Citizens after sustaining an injury in Wednesday’s game. On the other hand, Josef Mifsud returns for Sliema after serving a one-match ban.
