Zejtun Corinthians for training camp in Sheffield

Second Division side Zejtun Corinthians will be attending a training camp in Sheffield between August 12 and 15. This was revealed during a press conference which was held at Palazzo Abela, Tarxien on Friday.

New Zejtun Corinthians president Sean Abela explained that after last season’s success which was the result of a collective effort by the players, technical staff and supporters, the club still aims high and after securing a place in Division 2, they aim at moving a further step.

Abela said that despite some difficulties which cropped up shortly after the election of the new comittee, the club still aims at preparing for the coming season in the best possible manner.

The Zejtun president said that the club aimed at strengthening the squad with four to five new players. These include Silvio Sciberras, Bronwen Bugeja and Daniel Cosaitis. The club is also currently negotiating with Albanian coach Fatos Daja and discussions are at an advanced stage.

Sean Abela concluded by saying that with the committee’s hard work and the full backing by the Zejtun supporters, the players will be doing their best to challenge for promotion.

Club secretary Carmelo Abela explained that the idea regarding the Sheffield training camp came about following contacts he established with officials from Sheffield United. He said that this training camp was made possible thanks the full support of Sheffield United and a number of sponsors.

Abela said the team will be having a number of training sessions at the Sheffield United Academy and revealed the possibility of a friendly match against amateur club Sheffield FC which is the oldest football club in the world after being set up in 1857.

The Zejtun squad has been invited to attend the League Championship match between Sheffield United and Queen’s Park Rangers.

Carmelo Abela said that hopefully this would not only be a one-off experience and that the players would benefit from this training camp. The Zejtun secretary concluded by saying that he is exploring the possibility
of having the Zejtun Corinthians nursery benefit from the professionality and organisation of Sheffield United.

Captain Charlo Magro thanked the committee for providing them the opportunity of this training camp and said that such camps would help them prepare in the best way possible for the coming season.

Magro concluded by thanking supporters for their backing and hoped that this season will be another successful season for the club.
