Second edition of Powerade Cup launched

Four Premier League clubs and two from Division 1 will be taking part in the second edition of the Powerade Cup – a tournament which will be held at the Victor Tedesco Stadium between August 13 and 20. Details were revealed during a press conference which was held at Papillon Cafe, Hamrun.

Vittoriosa Stars, St. Andrews and hosts Hamrun Spartans will be playing in Group A while St. George’s, Qormi and Floriana will be playing in Group B.

Hamrun Spartans PRO Emmanuel Fenech said that this second edition of the tournament is being organised on a much larger scale than last year and the target is to include the participation of foreign clubs in future editions.

Fenech thanked the Hamrun Spartans Supporters Club for their help in the organisation of the tournament.

Hamrun Spartans vice-president Victor Cassar announced that the tournament will be screened on TV, probably the first time that non-competitive football matches will be broadcast.

He said that there is particular enthusiasm surrounding the club following the signing of David Camilleri, Massimo Grima, Omar Borg and Scottish striker Dene Shields and the return of Ryan Fenech from Sliema Wanderers. Serbian defender Johann Vukanic is set to be the fourth foreigner besiders Martin Hrubsa and Marcelo Pereira who have been confirmed. The club is also close to securing the services of defender Steve Bonnici from Melita.

Block tickets for the tournament will be available for €13 and these could be bought from the clubs taking part in the tournament. Cassar said these clubs will be getting a share from the sale of these tickets.

Victor Cassar thanked Powerade and General Soft Drinks for their support throughout the years.

On behalf of Melita, Sandro Micallef explained that the matches will be broadcast the following day on the new channel Malta Stars – 614. This channel will be dedicated to screening BOV Premier League matches, GFA matches and other local sports including waterpolo, hockey, rugby, basketball.

On the other hand, Gilbert Zammit from Powerade said that the company is proud to be association with the tournament saying that Powerade was always keen to support such initiatives.
