Lija Athletic present new signings

Lija Athletic Football Club presented their new signings for the forthcoming season 2010/2011.

The Second Division Champions have been working on several reinforcements in the different departments of the team to become more competitive and offer a stiffer challenge in what is expected to be a tough First Division campaign.

Lija Athletic F.C. President and chairman, Mr. Charles J. Scerri welcomed the new players with the Lija football family. He also explained that some players were returning after being loaned to other clubs last season. Mr. Marco Gerada was also confirmed for the forthcoming season, and training sessions are to resume next Monday 16th August after the summer recess. The President made particular reference to the four Serbian players who arrived in Malta last Thursday, for a trial with the club.

Lija Athletic FC also secured the services of goal-keeper Sean Mintoff (ex-St. Patrick), Wayne Borg St. John from Mellieha S.C., Ayrton Buhagiar from Mdina Knights F.C., brothers Matthew and Timmy Fleri Soler from Hibernians F.C., Tonio MacKay from Valletta F.C. as well as Dalton Caruana from Hamrun Spartans F.C.

For another season, the club has reached an agreement with all its sponsors namely Falzon Group of Companies, being the club’s main sponsor, Gardenia Household Goods, D. Formosa (Esso Ltd.), W.P. Ltd., as well as EuroSport, the latter sponsoring the kits.

The President thanked wholeheartedly these establishments and companies, and said that without their financial boost, the club would not have achieved its desired targets and success of last season.

Finally, Mr. Scerri made reference to the ongoing developments at the Lija/Balzan football ground, whereby a new club house has just been built and recently furnished amidst huge sacrifices by some of the Lija Athletic F.C. committee members. In this new club house, one can find new dressing rooms, a conference room and Club and Nursery offices. The President continued by saying that after the recent expenses in completing
the newly built structures; floodlight poles, fencing and layering are the next in line. This dream is being accomplished thanks to financial aids from the National Lottery Good Causes Fund, Ministry for Culture, Youth & Sport, the “Kunsill Malti Ghall-iSport” as well as the ongoing voluntary work from a number of Lija Athletic F.C. committee members.
