Second & Third Division Knock-Out preliminary round reaches final stage

Centenary StadiumThe last round of matches from the group stage of the quick-Keno Second & Third Division Knock-Out will be played between Friday and Thursday with the last two matches from each group. So far, only one team has secured a place in the quarter-finals. In fact, Rabat Ajax won Group 1 which included Mellieha, Ghaxaq and Mdina Knights.

In Group 2, Zejtun Corinthians need at least a point from the game against Gzira United to reach the next stage as they lead the way with six points, two ahead of the Maroons. On the other hand, Gzira have to beat Zejtun to qualify.

The situation in Group 3 is the same as in Group 2 with Mgarr United needing a point from the game against San Gwann. Mgarr lead the group with six points followed by San Gwann on four.

Zebbug Rangers are the leaders in Group 4 with six points, three ahead of Siggiewi and Birzebbuga St. Peter’s. Therefore the three of them stand a chance of reaching the next round. With a draw in the game against Birzebbuga, Zebbug would make sure of a place in the quarter-finals. Birzebbuga have to beat Zebbug by at least two goals and hope that Siggiewi fail to beat Pembroke or win by just one goal. Siggiewi, on the other hand, need a comfortable win over Pembroke and hope that Birzebbuga register a narrow win over Zebbug.

In Group 5, Qrendi and Mtarfa lead the way with four points after both registered a 1-0 wins over Marsaskala and Zurrieq respectively on Monday. A win for Mtarfa over Marsaskala would put Paul Farrugia’s side in the quarter-finals should Qrendi fail to beat Zurrieq. Qrendi need a win over Zurrieq and hope that Mtarfa are held at least in a draw by Marsaskala. Zurrieq, on the other hand, have to beat Qrendi and hope Mtarfa fail to beat Marsaskala.

In Group 6, Kirkop United need a draw from their last game against Naxxar Lions to qualify for the quarter-finals as they lie two points ahead of the Lions. Naxxar, on the other hand, have to win to make it to the next round.

The game between Sta. Venera Lightnings and Senglea Athletic will decide the issue in Group 7 with the latter needing a draw to reach the quarter-finals. For Marco Buttigieg’s side, a win is necessary as they trail by two points.

In Group 8, three teams still have the chance to qualify as Attard lead the way with six points after claiming maximum points from the first two matches, defeating Luqa 1-0 and St. Patrick 2-1. The Saints and Kalkara on three points. Attard need a point from the game against Kalkara to reach the quarter-finals. St. Patrick have to beat Luqa by at least two goals, hoping that Kalkara register a narrow win over Attard. On the other hand, Kalkara have to beat Attard and hope that St. Patrick are held by Luqa in a draw or win by just one goal.
