Sannat Lions won the Freedom Day Cup for the sixth time in their history after defeating SK Victoria Wanderers on Thursday.
The Lions’ win matured with a convincing performance during the second half when they practically held command of play and created a number of scoring opportunities. Sannat scored an early goal but suffered Victoria’s reaction throughout the first half. The protagonist in Sannat’s win was undoubtedly John Camilleri who scored a brace.
Sannat took the lead thanks to a close ranged header by John Camilleri following a cross from the left flank by Mark Formosa. Victoria leveled the score three minutes from the end of the first half when a low drive by Ige Adesina, served by Ajibade Adesina, was blocked by the defense and off the rebound Joseph Refalo concluded with a low shot.
Sannat had an excellent start to the second period and regained the lead after just two minutes of play. Mark Muscat entered the area from the right flank and from his low cross John Camilleri was at the right place for the tap-in. Sannat now took command of play and on 50 minutes a header by Eric Nwankwo from a cross by Elton Vella hit the crossbar. Sannat secured victory three minutes from time through a lob by Eric Nwankwo from the edge of the area.
After the game, Mr Vincent Grech, Chairman of the Committee for Public and Popular Feasts at the Ministry for Gozo, presented the trophies and medals to the players in the presence of GFA President Mr Alvin Grech and the GFA General Secretary Mr Joe Bajada.
