First edition of Mtarfa Military Cup

Yellow Marines won Mtarfa Military Day Cup first edition organised by Mtarfa FC. The five-a-side tournament was part of Mtarfa Military Day event and in memory of the first ever silver trophy to be played in Malta – the Mtarfa Cup which was held in 1912.

Eight teams took part in the tournament with teams including players which play top level football in MFA competitions. All participants selected military names for their team to match with the Military Day theme. Such as Royal Mtarfa, Angelo Store, Underdogs, St. John Regiment, Mgarr RA, Rabat Lightning, Buqana Riders and winners Yellow Marines.

Floriana and St. Georges inaugurated the tournament with a thirty minutes match in memory of iMtarfa Cup followed with trophy presentation to both teams by Mtarfa Local Council. The tournament was played in an atmosphere of fair play. Military re-enactment took place throughout the event.

The Yellow Marines team included Cedrick Zahra, Giorgio Cumbo, Cleaven Mizzi, Joseph Pearson and Omar Smeir of Mtarfa FC, Jonathan Pearson of Hibernians and Adam Smeir of Rabat Ajax and Vincent. In the final match, they beat Rabat Lightnings 5-2. Referee of the match was Mr. Reno Galea.

The tournament was organised by Mtarfa FC in collaboration with the Mtarfa Local Council and was sponsored by Pink Promotion and Bulmer’s Cider.
