UEFA Appeals Body confirms decision to absolve Wellman

The UEFA Appeals Body met on Friday to decide on the appeal launched by former Malta national team player Kevin Sammut and UEFA following the decisions over the alleged match-fixing case in the match Norway vs Malta.

The board unanimously reconfirmed Stephen Wellman’s lack of involvement and/or knowledge of the alleged match-fixing case in this game.

The UEFA Appeals Body has reportedly extended Kevin Sammut’s ten-year ban to a life ban and confirmed the decision not to take disciplinary action against Kenneth Scicluna.

The UEFA Control & Disciplinary Body had originally banned Kevin Sammut for ten years. On the other hand, the board had stated that the findings of the disciplinary inspector were insufficient to take disciplinary action against Kenneth Scicluna and Stephen Wellman.

In a statement, Stephen Wellman said: “I am satisfied with this result as it confirms my innocence – a position that I have sustained since inception of the investigation by both Malta FA and UEFA officers, and which has finally been confirmed by not just one but two independent adjudicating bodies of UEFA.”

In these proceedings, Wellman was assisted by his lawyer Dr. Keith A. Borg.
