Floriana condemn Hamrun Spartans to Division 1

BOV-Premier-League---2012-2013Floriana registered their seventh consecutive win in the Relegation Pool as they defeated Hamrun Spartans to condemn the latter to playing in Division 1 next season.

In fact with one game to go, Hamrun remain four points behind Rabat Ajax.

The Greens lacked Tony Warner and Steve Pisani. Hamrun, on the other hand, welcomed back Adrian Borg but Terence Vella was unavailable.

Floriana took the lead on the 19th minute when Sacha Borg served Clyde Borg and off the latter’s cross, Igor Coronado’s first attempt was blocked by the goalkeeper, the ball bounced onto the Brazilian striker to end at the back of the net.

Hamrun Spartans replied with an Emiliano Lattes effort which was blocked by Jonathan Debono on 25 minutes.

The Spartans levelled matters on 31 minutes when off a cross from the right by Glenn Azzopardi, Massimo Grima slammed the ball past goalkeeper Jonathan Debono.

Substitute Luca Casha just failed to connect off an inviting cross from the right by Trevor Cilia on the 51st.

Three minutes later, Luca Casha put the Greens 2-1 ahead when served on the left by Cilia, beating Andrea Cassar with an angled shot.

The Greens made it 3-1 on 67 minutes, once again, thanks to Luca Casha who received a pass by Trevor Cilia, beating the Hamrun custodian with a shot from just inside the area.

Ten minutes from time, Roderick Fenech was sent off for the Spartans as he fouled Coronado just outside the area. From the resulting freekick, Igor Coronado’s attempt scraped past the post. Another Luca Casha effort from the left ended just wide.

Trevor Cilia was voted BOV Player of the Match.

Meanwhile Hibernians found no difficulty in beating Mosta 6-0 to join Birkirkara on top the BOV Premier League table.

Hibs take on Valletta while Birkirkara face Tarxien in the final matches next weekend.

Hibernians lacked Adrian Pulis while Steve Onyii Chiemeka, Carlos Campagnoli and Danail Mitev were all missing for Mosta.

The Paolites went close to taking the lead on the 12th minute with a Tarabai header off a cross by Jackson Lima hitting the upright.

Hibernians took the lead two minutes later thanks to a direct freekick by Andrew Cohen which gave goalkeeper Jeffrey Farrugia no chance.

Edison Luis dos Santos doubled the score on the 19th when he received an assist by Clayton Failla beating Farrugia with a shot from inside the area.

Ten minutes later, Cohen served Jean Paul Farrugia on the right and the latter’s effort hit the upright.

Hibs scored the third goal on the 39th minute when off a cross by Jean Paul Farrugia, there was a short clearance and Edison Luis dos Santos hit low past Farrugia.

Seven minutes in the second half, Clayton Failla scored the fourth goal, beating the Mosta goalkeeper from inside the area following a cross by Jean Paul Farrugia.

An Andrew Cohen freekick was turned into a corner by Jeffrey Farrugia on 56 minutes.

Jean Paul Farrugia scored the fifth goal on the 80th with a powerful shot from outside the area which was not held by goalkeeper Noel Attard.

Substitute Johann Bezzina made it 6-0 with another powerful shot from the edge of the area one minute from time.

Edison Luis dos Santos was voted BOV Player of the Match.
