BOV Women's Leagues get underway

bov-women-first-division-2013-2014The BOV Women’s First Division and the BOV Women’s Second Division Leagues kicked-off on Monday with three matches from the First Division and two from the Second Division.

Gozo FC kicked-off their commitments with a 4-2 win over Mgarr United in a balanced encounter at the Mgarr Ground.

The Gozitans were more agressive in the early stages, taking the lead thanks to Emma Xuereb on the 10th. Mgarr levelled matters on the 25th thanks to Daniela Ebejer and Alice Stanton made it 2-1 seven minutes later. Mgarr now held the initiative but the Gozitan rear-guard led by goalkeeper Dorianne Grech controlled well their opponents. However just before half-time, Melania Bajada scored from a direct freekick to restore equilibrium. Six minutes in the second half, Nicole Buttigieg made it 3-2 for Gozo and Joselene Gafa sealed the issue with a fourth goal on 63 minutes.

Champions Birkirkara defeated Pembroke Athleta 3-0 at the Charles Abela Stadium.

Although the Stripes held the initiative during the first half, it was only three minutes in the second half that they managed to break the deadlock thaks to a goal by Rachel Cuschieri. Martina Cilia doubled the score on 73 minutes and Rachel Cuschieri sealed the issue with a third goal seven minutes from time.

Hibernians dound no difficulty in beating newly-promoted Kirkop United 8-0 at the Mgarr Ground.

Despite having several new signings in squad, Kirkop could only keep their opponents at bay for just over thirty minutes as Charlene Zammit put the Paolites ahead on 36 minutes. Four minutes later, AnnMarie Muscat doubled the score and just before half-time Francesca Chircop made it 4-0. Dionne Tonan scored on the 57th and 62nd to increase the lead further. Francesca Chircop made it 6-0 on 63 minutes before Kathleen Saliba and Dorianne Theuma added another two goals on the 82nd and 89th.

Janice Zahra put the Rainbows ahead on 39 minutes. Three minutes in the second half, Francesca Cauchi doubled the score and Kim Magro sealed the issue with a third goal five minutes from time.

At the Zebbug Ground, Lija / Iklin and Vittoriosa Stars shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

Jessica Cardona put Vittoriosa ahead on 15 minutes and the same player doubled the score on the 26th. Francesca Bartolo pulled one back on 37 minutes and five minutes later, Antoinette Cachia levelled matters.
