Michael Mifsud to sign for Sliema Wanderers on Sunday

luxembourg-malta120602bMalta captain Michael Mifsud will be signing for Sliema Wanderers on Sunday, therefore making a return to his boyhood club.

A product of the Wanderers, Mifsud made his Premier League debut in season 1997/98. He left the club to join Kaiserslautern in Germany in 2001 where he played mainly for the club’s second team. He returned to Malta towards the end of 2004, playing for Sliema for the latter part of season 2003/04. He then moved to Norwegian top division side Lillestrøm, where he was the club’s leading scorer in the 2006 season with 11 goals in 19 appearances.

In January 2007, Mifsud signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Coventry City in the League Championship in England. With Coventry, he managed to hit the headlines with a brace in a 2–0 win over Premier League champions Manchester United at Old Trafford. In February 2009, he joined Barnsley on loan. Mifsud had a short spell with Valletta between March and May 2010, leaving his mark with seven goals in seven league matches, helping he Citizens win the U*BET FA Trophy and the National League 100 Anniversary Cup.

In February 2011, he joined Qormi but his signing was not enough to spare the club from playing in the Relegation Pool. He returned to Valletta the following summer, signing a four-year deal but his contract was terminated by mutual consent at the end of season 2012/13 after winning one championship and two Super Cups. Last September, he signed a one-year deal with Australian A-League side Melbourne Heart but was released in March.
