Zejtun Corinthians present new signings

Second Division side Zejtun Corinthians presented their new signings during a press conference at the club’s premises on Saturday.

Club secretary Shalom Mercieca said Zejtun have appointed Edward Azzopardi as the new coach and Darren Vella as his assistant. Two coaches who had rendered services to the club as players. Also forming part of the technical staff are team manager Albert Cumbo, Richie Curmi and former team captain Charlo Magro.

Joseph Buttigieg has been appointed as physical trainer. Darren Vella will also be in charge of the Youths team.

The squad for the coming season will be made up of Abela Kenneth, Abela Alan, Aquilina Stephen, Borg Matthew, Busuttil Gary, Camilleri Vince, Felice Justin, Formosa Kurt, Pisani Matthew, Portelli Andy, Scicluna Margeith, Sell Ryan, Tabone Jurgen, Vassallo Karl, Vella Jean Matthias, Vella Julian and Zahra Daniel. Two nursery products – Jamie Mifsud and Neil Tabone who were on loan with Hibernians and a Floriana respectively will also form part of the squad. Tabone was part of the Malta Under-17 squad which took part in the UEFA Under-17 Championship finals.

The club’s foreigner will be Mendes Da Silva Diones.

Shalom Mercieca said that with the current squad, the committee is looking forward for the coming season and believes that the team could challenge for promotion.

New club president Notary Reuben Debono said it was an honour for him to lead the club which has a rich history.

Dr Debono said he believed the committee could look forward towards a positive season considering the players in the squad.

He thanked former president Sean Abela and Supreme Travel for their financial support. He also thanked sponsors Michael Attard Limited, Tewmi Motoring School, Landmark Developers, Excel Home Real Estates and Jacks Limited.

Dr Debono went on to thank the supporters for following the team even during friendly matches and the committee for giving their time for the club.

Treasurer Melvyn Darmanin thanked Honorary President Sean Abela and welcomed new president Notary Reuben Debono to the club. He said that supporters all wished to see the team compete in the top divisions but this brought huge financial challenges and without the backing of sponsors and supporters, the club would be unable to meet these challenges.

Darmanin said the club will be doing its best to maintain a competitive team while not overspending and thanked the players who joined the club for the love of the shirt and not for money.
