Balzan hope to edge closer to European dream

Balzan will be hoping to moving a step closer to securing fourth place and hence a place in the UEFA Europa League this summer as they face champions Hibernians in one of the two BOV Premire League matches in programme on Sunday.

Oliver Spiteri’s side lies seven points ahead of Floriana, who face Naxxar Lions, in the first game. In case, Floriana fail to beat Naxxar, Balzan would be sure of fourth place.

The Greens will be without four players who are serving a suspension – goalkeeper Matthew Calleja Cremona, Steve Pisani, Vito Plut and Amadou Samb but Matteo Piciollo will be back after missing the clash with Hibernians.

Naxxar earned just two points from the last four matches and are therefore desperate for victory in order to climb out of the danger zone. They are fifth from bottom but lie just two points away from tenth-placed Qormi.

The first round clash ended in a 1-1 draw but Floriana won 4-1 in the second round.

Newly-crowned champions Hibernians hope to extend their unbeaten run to thirty-one matches as they take on Balzan. On the other hand, Balzan have to match Floriana’s result in order to make sure of fourth place.

Hibernians defeated Balzan 3-0 and 4-0 in the previous rounds. Balzan vs Hibs 0-3, 0-4.
