Gzira United secure Play-Off spot after penalty shoot-out

Gzira United will be taking part in the BOV Premier League Play-Off against the team placing tenth in the Premier League after defeating Melita on penalties in a decider for third place in the BOV First Division.

No goals were scored throughout the ninety minutes. The game went into extra-time but neither side managed to break the deadlock.

In the penalty shoot-out, the Maroons scored four and Melita three.

Moises Avila Perez scored the first penalty for Gzira, Julian Galea scored for Melita; Jeremiah Ani hit the crossbar for Gzira, Kurt Coleiro made it 2-1 for Melita; Ryan Dalli levelled matters for Gzira, George Gribbon 3-2 for Melita; Matteo Caribotti scored for Gzira to make it 3-3, Federico Mennini Righini hit wide for Melita; Daniel Scerri 4-3 for Gzira, Nicholas Micallef had his penalty saved by goalkeeper Anthony Curmi.

The BOV Premier League Play-Off is scheduled for Friday May 15 at the Hibernians Stadium, kick-off at 19:30.

The team placing tenth from the BOV Premier League will emerge from the final round of matches which is due to be played on Friday. Naxxar are currently seventh on 22 points, followed by Qormi and Mosta on 21 and Tarxien on 20. Qormi and Tarxien face relegated sides Zebbug and Pietà in their final matches while Naxxar and Mosta cross swords in a direct clash.
