Malta will be hosting Moldova in a friendly match on Thursday 24th March.
The Malta Football Association has been discussing with a number of associations with regards to friendly matches in view of the European Qualifiers leading to the 2018 FIFA World Cup which kick-off in September.
Another friendly match could be played in March, another two in May/June and one in August before the first World Cup qualifier against Scotland in programme on September 4th at Ta’ Qali.
Malta met Moldova seven times but only two of these matches were competitive matches when Malta held Moldova 1-1 away from home in March 2007 but then lost to Moldova 2-3 at Ta’ Qali in October 2007 – two matches from the qualifiers leading to the EURO 2008. In a friendly in March 1999, Moldova won 2-0 at Ta’ Qali, then won 1-0 in a friendly match at home in August 2000. In the Malta International Tournament, Malta won 3-0 in February 2002, drew 0-0 in February 2004 and lost 0-2 to Moldova in February 2006.
