Double for Hamrun Spartans Under-17

Hamrun Spartans Under-17 claimed the double as they won the Under-17 Knock-Out Competition, organised by the Youth Football Association after beating Sliema Wanderers 1-0 in front of a sizeable crowd at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Miguel Simiana scored the all important goal of the match early in the second half, with Sliema hitting the post twice, in what was a very tight final.

At the end of the match, YFA President, Fr. Hilary Tagliaferro, assisted by Vice President, Robert Attard and General Secretary, Joe Micallef presented the trophies and mementos to both sets of players.

This was Hamrun’s second success in the YFA U17 Knock-Out Competition and thus completed the double for this season, after achieving the same feat in the 2011/12 season.

The Spartans were crowned champions after winning Section A last month. The Spartans’ fate was decided on the last match day after a tight contest throughout the season with Mosta. The match against San Gwann – which the Spartans won 2-0 – proved decisive as Mosta lost 1-0 against Pietà Hotspurs. Prior to this match, both teams were on equal points.

This success is the result of hard work carried out by the Nursery committee and coaches throughout a number of years. The investment made in facilities and coaching staff is bearing its fruit. It is to be noted that this was the second Under 17 Section A league title won by Hamrun Spartans during the past four years.

Mosta finished in the runner-up position while Paola Hibs and San Gwann finished in the bottom two places.

St. Andrews won Section B ahead of Sliema Wanderers with Zabbar St. Patrick and Swieqi United finishing in the bottom two places.

In Section C1, Melita emerged as winners ahead of Qormi while Fgura United won Section C2 ahead of Zejtun Corinthians. Birzebbuga Windmill won Section D with Ghaxaq finishing as runners-up
