Marsaskala will soon have its football ground following the launch of a project by Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport Chris Agius.

Despite a population of around 16,000 which increases to 22,000 in summer, children attending the Marsaskala FC Youth Nursery had to train in a small pitch inside the Primary School or other football grounds while the senior team makes use of the Corradino C Ground. Therefore the government felt the need to provide the club with a football ground for all its teams to carry out their training sessions.

Deputy Chief of Staff at the Office of the Prime Minister, Alex Muscat, said that when the AUM project was launched in May 2015 covering an area of 90,000 square metres, the area had to include a football ground. However when this was reduced to 31,000 square metres, the inclusion of a football ground was no longer possible. However the government was committed to give the club adequate facilities and after a number of sites were considered, an unused part of the Family Park was deemed as the right spot for a football ground. This project will carry an investment of €1.5 million and would be completed eighteen months following the issue of the permits.

Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport Chris Agius spoke about how the government and the Malta Football Association made it possible for clubs to have adequate facilities. He said that the next objective is to make them more sustainable and for this reason, the government is working on a White Paper for the commercialisation of sports facilities which would enable clubs to become more sustainable and operate on a more professional basis.

MFA General Secretary Bjorn Vassallo and Marsaskala FC president Luke Spagnol also addressed those present.
