Testimonial match for Gilbert Agius

Valletta F.C. will be organising a testimonial match for Gilbert Agius. During this testimonial match, the Valletta F.C. selection will be play a friendly match against Whitegate United. The event will be held at the Luxol Sports Ground on Saturday 4th June at 17:30.

Gilbert Agius started his football career with Luxol St. Andrews nursery before joining his home town club Valletta. He soon settled into the capital city’s senior team and played for the Malta Under-21 side where, notably, he scored Malta’s winning goal against Luxembourg on 21st February 1995. Agius made his Citizens debut at the age of 16 on 2nd September 1990, against Sliema Wanderers. On 7th November 1993, at the age of 19 he made his debut for the senior national side in a 2-1 victory for Malta over Gabon in an international tournament in Tunisia.

Footballer of the Year in seasons 1996/1997, 2000/01 and 2006/07, Gilbert Agius also won the Player of the Month award thirteen times. On October 11, 2011 Gilbert Agius received the commemorative cap and medal issued by UEFA for players who have reached a century of international appearances.

During the beginning of the season 2012–13, Gilbert Agius was chosen as Assistant Manager of Valletta, with coach Mark Miller. He later left this role and came out of retirement to play for Gozitan side Xewkija Tigers, helping them to win the GFA title but his appointment as Valletta coach effectively brought the curtains down on his decorated playing career.
In summer 2014/15, Agius replaced Andre Paus as Valletta coach. Later through the season, he switched the role with Ivan Zammit. Last summer, following the appointment of Paul Zammit as new Valletta coach, he was appointed as assistant coach.
