Birkirkara aim to move towards professional status

bkara-fcBirkirkara FC will continue to work hard towards moving towards a professional status. This was revealed by Birkirkara FC president Dr Adrian Delia during the presentation of the club’s new signings on Wednesday.

Dr Delia said that the clubs aims at having a professional set-up where more players are fully focussed on football, making it their full-time job. He said that the technical staff which includes the coach, assistant coach, physical trainer and goalkeepers’ coach are all employed on a full-time basis and a number of players are training seven to nine times a week rather than just four or five five times a week as before.

The Birkirkara president said that to have a professional set-up, it was of utmost importance to have full-time administrators, saying that that MFA’s proposal of having one full-time administrator to cover all clubs in a particular division was not sensible as this administrator would have sensitive information about each club at his disposal.

Having a professional set-up definitely needs a good financial back-up and for this reason, the club would have to prepare at least a five-year business plan to be able to achieve this. He stressed that for any club to achieve this, it could not spend all the money at its disposal on signing new players.

Dr Delia said this summer was a very hectic one due to the transfer window and the UEFA Europa League commitments. He thanked vice-president Frank Zarb for his support, the supporters’ committee for working hard, the ever-growing number of members who continuously back the club and the club’s main sponsors.

He said that apart from being the first club to reach a third round in a UEFA competition, the Stripes managed to obtain five consecutive positive results in UEFA competitions. This clearly showed that no matter what their opponents were, they always tried their best. Dr Delia said that the results achieved this summer are a good foundation for next year’s participation as the clubs seeks the 21st consecutive participation in UEFA competitions.

bkara-fc-presentation2016The Birkirkara president said the club had full faith in coach Drazen Besek and after an intensive transfer campaign in the January transfer window, they strengthened the squad further this summer. He stressed that although the club was in favour of increasing the number of foreigners, Birkirkara still aim at having a good base of local players. In fact, they signed Andreas Vella from Qormi, James Brincat from Mosta, Shaun Bajada from Ghajnsielem and Steve Bonnici from Floriana while welcoming back Rowen Muscat from Pavia and Matteo Desira Buttigieg from St. Andrews.

The club also extended the contract of a number of players, including that of captain Gareth Sciberras. Six players were loaned to other clubs, namely Edison Bilbao Zarate to Ghajnsielem, Ryan Camenzuli to Floriana and Emerson Marcelina, Philip Schranz, Daniel Zerafa and Kurt Zammit to Tarxien Rainbows.

Dr Delia said that with the previous format of the Premier League went against the spirit of the game with points achieved were being deducted as they were halved. This means that unlike before when the league was divided into two phases, one has to plan for the whole season.

Birkirkara coach Drazen Besek said that after starting the pre-season in June, he was happy with the team’s performance in Europe and the first two BOV Premier League game. He said that in his opinion, Birkirkara had built a strong team and until January, he would see how he and the players would work together and achieve results.
