Fine win for St. Andrews in derby

BOV-Premier-LeagueLed for the first time by coach Danilo Doncic, who replaced Jose Borg earlier this month, St. Andrews registered a fine 4-1 win over neighbours Pembroke Athleta at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Sunday.

The Saints had only once change from the team which lost to Balzan as Ivan Edgardo Paz replaced the injured Daniel Brandle. Pembroke, on the other hand, had three changes as Adrian Borg, Oleg Maksymov and the injured Luke Montebello made way for Clifford Gauci, Mateus Regis da Silva Mateus and Jhonatan Bernardo Mariano.

St. Andrews took the lead on the 18th minute when they were awarded a penalty after a defender handled the ball inside the area and from the penalty spot, Joseph Farrugia beat Calleja Cremona.

Pembroke took only two minutes to level matters when off an assist by Paltemio Barbetti, the ball reached Jhonathan Bernardo Mariano who lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Jake Galea.

St. Andrews, however, regained the lead on the half-hour when they were awarded another penalty and once again, Joseph Farrugia made no mistake from the penalty spot.

In added time, Pembroke were reduced to ten men by referee Neil Robinson who showed Asani Djeljilj a second yellow card for dissent.

Five minutes into the second half, St. Andrews increased the lead through Ziga Kastrevec who headed the ball home off a Joseph Farrugia freekick.

In stoppage time, St. Andrews added another thanks to substitute Jacob Walker when served by Enmy Manuel Pena Beltre.
