Comfortable wins for Floriana, Tarxien in FA Trophy third round

Premier League sides Floriana and Tarxien Rainbows both registered comfortable wins as another four matches from the third round of the FA Trophy were played on Tuesday. Mqabba and Qrendi also reached the next stage to join St. Andrews, Senglea Athletic, SK Victoria Wanderers, Marsa and Sliema Wanderers in the fourth round.

Floriana found no difficulty in beating Second Division side Birzebbuga St. Peter’s at the Centenary Stadium.

Nicolas Chiesa converted a penalty on the 10th minute and ten minutes later, Maurizio Vella doubled the score. Substitute Mario Fontanella scored twice on the 49th and 65th with Ignacio Varela scoring a fifth goal twelve minutes from time.

The Greens will be facing Victoria Hotspurs or Ghajnsielem in the next round.

Tarxien Rainbows defeated First Division side Gharghur 6-0 in another match at the Centenary Stadium.

Matthew Tabone put the Rainbows ahead on the half-hour and seven minutes later, Alex da Paixao Alves doubled the score. Seven minutes in the second half, Julian Galea made it 3-0 and Alex Nilsson 4-0 on the 61st. An own goal on the 71st increased the lead for Tarxien with Alex da Paixao Alves scoring the sixth and final goal three minutes from time.

The Rainbows will be facing First Division side Lija Athletic in the fourth round.

A goal by Dhonatan Santos da Hora on the 77th minute gave Qrendi a narrow win over Swieqi United in a clash between two Second Division sides at the Luxol Stadium.

Qrendi, who had eliminated Oratory Youths in the previous round, will be facing Sliema Wanderers in the next round.

A brace by Paul Chimezie in the final six minutes gave First Division side Mqabba a 2-0 win over Second Division side Siggiewi in another match at the Luxol Stadium.

In the fourth round, Mqabba, who had defeated Msida St. Joseph 1-0 in the second round, will be facing Nadur Youngsters or Hamrun Spartans.
