FA Trophy: SK Victoria Wanderers through to quarter-finals — Valletta, St. Andrews eliminated

Gozitan side SK Victoria Wanderers secured a historic place in the quarter-finals of the FA Trophy after eliminating Premier League side St. Andrews in one of six matches from the fourth round which were played on Wednesday. Apart from St. Andrews, champions Valletta were also eliminated from the competition.

The eight quarter-finalists are therefore Balzan, Floriana, Hamrun Spartans, Pembroke Athleta, Tarxien Rainbows and holders Sliema Wanderers, First Division side Senglea Athletic and Gozitans SK Victoria Wanderers.

BOV Premier League leaders Balzan defeated Valletta 1-0 at the National Stadium thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time goal.

Balzan had Bruno Giglio de Oliveira sent off for kicking an opponent on the 26th minute and fourteen minutes fro time, it was the turn of Rowen Muscat to be sent off for Valletta after receiving a second yellow card. With the game seemingly heading for extra-time, substitute Alfred Effiong had other thoughts as one minute in added time, he notched the winner for Balzan.

At the Gozo Stadium, a goal by Predrag Djordjevic gave SK Victoria Wanderers a shock 1-0 win over St. Andrews.

The Wanderers had eliminated Sta. Venera Lightnings, Melita and Mgarr United in the previous rounds. On the other hand, St. Andrews had registered a shock 3-0 win over Birkirkara in the third round.

At the National Stadium, Floriana defeated Gozitan champions Ghajnsielem 4-1.

Ryan Camenzuli put the Greens ahead on the 4th minute. Steve Pisani doubled the score on the 36th and Mario Fontanella converted a penalty on the 63rd. Demba Toure pulled one back for the Blacks thanks to a penalty but Nicolas Chiesa made it 4-1 eight minutes from time.

At the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Sliema Wanderers eliminated Second Division side Qrendi with a comfortable 5-0 score. Denni put the Wanderers ahead on the 33rd minute and Jean Paul Farrugia doubled the score one minute from half-time. Ryan Spiteri scored a third goal eight minutes in the second half with a brace by substitute Peter Xuereb on the 68th and 88th increasing the tally for John Buttigieg’s side.

Pembroke Athleta came from behind to beat Marsa 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium.

Luis Andre de Melo Lima converted a penalty for Marsa two minutes from the end of the first half. However Stevan Racic equalised on the 59th and the same Serbian striker put Pembroke ahead on the 74th minute.

Marsa could have equalised on the 90th when they were awarded another penalty. However Luis de Melo Lima’s effort from the penalty spot was neutralised by Pembroke’s Argyrs Roppas.

Saturday Nanapere scored the all-important goal on the 79th minute for Hamrun Spartans as they defeated Mqabba 1-0 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
