New head-coach for Mqabba Youth Nursery

Mqabba FC Youth Nursery has appointed Mr Michael Degiorgio as the new Nursery’s Head Coach.

Considered as an important figure in Maltese football history, Michael Degiorgio is a UEFA A Licence holder and qualified Head Coach. He has been involved in local football for several years, first as player and then as coach, both at senior and youth levels. His professional football career started in 1979 with Ħamrun Spartans FC (1979-1993, 1996-1997 and 2001-2003). During his spell with the Spartans, he played nearly 200 games scoring 16 goals. He also played 85 games for Naxxar Lions FC (1993-1996 and 1997-1999) scoring 6 goals.

Between 1981 and 1993 Michael Degiorgio played 74 games for the Malta senior national team finding the net on 4 occasions. During his successful career, Michael Degiorgio won various local football honours including 4 Premier Division Championships, 6 FA Trophies, 4 Lowenbrau Cups, 4 Super Cups and 1 Super 5 Cup. Although many remember Michael Degiorgio playing as midfielder, at the end of his career played as central defender.

Michael Degiorgio’s most prestigious personal football honour was ‘The Maltese Player of the Year’ award for the 1989/1990 season while playing for Ħamrun Spartans FC.

Following his long career as footballer, Michael Degiorgio studied and started working as football coach with various clubs namely Naxxar Lions FC, Ħamrun Spartans FC, Marsaxlokk FC, Fgura United FC and Kalkara FC. Michael Degiorgio gained experience in youth coaching following his appointment as coach of Malta Under 17. He also worked as Head Coach with Tarxien Rainbows Youth Nursery, Valletta FC Youth Nursery, Kalkara FC Youth Nursery, Naxxar Lions FC Youth Nursery, Gżira United FC Youth Nursery and Fgura United FC Youth Nursery.

During his long experience, Michael Degiorgio has demonstrated positive attitude, commitment and enthusiasm so that the goals of the clubs he worked for were reached. This approach, combined with his leadership traits, propelled the Nursery’s Committee to appoint Michael Degiorgio as Head Coach with the aim to pursue on the strategy and objectives adopted by the Nursery in line with the slogan ‘For the Good of the Young’.
