FA Trophy: Early exit for SK Victoria Wanderers

SK Victoria Wanderers, who made it to the semi-finals last season, suffered an early exit as they lost 1-4 to champions Xewkija Tigers in an all-Gozitan clash at the Gozo Stadium in one of four matches from the FA Trophy first round on Sunday.

An own goal on the 17th minute paved the way for Xewkija who doubled the score thanks to Gennaro Hili just before half time. Rodney Buttigieg added another six minutes in the second half and Thiago Melo dos Santos scored a fourth goal on the 81st. Nicolás Abot scored a consolation goal three minutes from time.

In the next round, Xewkija will be facing Xghajra Tornados.

A goal by Elton da Silva on the 66th minute enabled Victoria Hotspurs to eliminate Nadur Youngsters in another match at the Gozo Stadium. The Hotspurs will be meeting Birzebbuga St. Peter’s in the second round.

Mellieha defeated Mdina Knights 3-2 at the Centenary Stadium. Kyle Simiana put Mellieha ahead on the 14th minute but Samuel Bartolo equalised two minutes later. Simiana restored the lead five minutes in the second half and Bryan Rene Bautista Navarro extended the lead on the 66th minute. Five minutes later, Mdina reduced the gap thanks to an own goal.

A clash with Swieqi United is next for Mellieha in the second round.

In another match at the Centenary Stadium, Dingli Swallows came from behind to defeat neighbours Mtarfa 3-1. Paul Azzopardi put Mtarfa ahead on the 9th minute but goals by Peter Andrejco on the 26th, Karl Cilia on the 73rd and Dylan Camenzuli one minute from time put Dingli in the next round where they would be meeting Zejtun Corinthians.
