Late goal gives Floriana narrow win

Floriana scored a late goal as they defeated Hamrun Spartans 1-0 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium and extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

For the Spartans, this was the second defeat and now share seventh place with Birkirkara on seven points from five matches.

The Greens notched the winner eight minutes from time when off a cross by Leighton Grech, Mario Fontanella’s header was partially saved by Sultana and off the rebound, the Italian striker slotted past the Hamrun custodian.

Meanwhile Birkirkara returned to winning ways as they survived a good comeback by Naxxar Lions and scored in added time to win 3-2 at the National Stadium.

The Stripes took the lead on the 28th minute when off a cross from the left, Jake Grech controlled the ball well and with a powerful shot beat the Naxxar goalkeeper.

Luke Montebello doubled the score two minutes from the end of the first half, hitting home from close range following a cross by Bruno Andrade.

Naxxar reduced the gap three minutes in the second half when Ryan Grech sent Daren Falzon through and the latter advanced and dribbled the goalkeeper before depositing the ball inside the empty net.

The Lions equalised on the 70th minute when off an assist by Scott Fenwick, Daniel Mateo Bustos hit home from close range.

However three minutes in added time, Birkirkara regained the lead when off a freekick, Martin Klein’s header was saved partially by Nicht and Cain Attard hit home off the rebound.
