FA Trophy takes centre stage this weekend

The FA Trophy, sponsored by Boost Diesel, takes centre stage this weekend with matches from the third round of the competition. Four matches will be played on Friday, six on Saturday and another six on Sunday.

In the first match at the Centenary Stadium on Friday, Lija Athletic take on Second Division side Kalkara. Lija are currently bottom of the table with five points from twelve matches in the BOV Premier League while Kalkara are currently second in BOV Division Two on 22 points, one point behind leaders Swieqi. In the previous round, Kalkara eliminated Third Division leaders Sta. Venera Lightnings 2-1.

In the second match, Mosta take on First Division side Mqabba. The Blues are currently ninth on fourteen points from twelve matches while Mqabba lie in third place in the BOV First Division with sixteen points from nine matches. In the second round, Mqabba defeated Second Division side Mgarr 3-0.

In the first match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Second Division side Siggiewi take on First Division side Pietà Hotspurs. Pietà are currently second in Division 1 with 18 points from nine matches while Siggiewi lie in joint-third place in the BOV Second Division with 19 points from ten matches. In the previous round, Siggiewi defeated another Division 2 side Luqa St. Andrew’s 4-2 while the Hotspurs eliminated Pembroke Athleta with a 3-1 score in a clash between two First Division sides.

In the second match, San Gwann and Melita cross swords in a clash between two First Division teams. San Gwann are currently joint-sixth in the BOV First Division with 13 points while Melita share the eleventh place on six points. In the second round, San Gwann beat St. George’s 2-0 while Melita eliminated Gozitan side Ghajnsielem after the penalty shoot-out following a 3-3 draw at the end of extra-time.
