Maroons test for Valletta

Valletta will be all out to claim the three points on Sunday as they take on Gzira United in one of the two BOV Premier League matches in programme at the Hibernians Stadium.

Following Balzan’s narrow win over Hibernians on Saturday, the Citizens are now second on 27 points, three points behind the leaders, followed by Floriana on 26, Gzira, Hibernians and Sliema on 24. A win is therefore a must for Zoran Popovic’s side in order to re-join Balzan on top. Gzira, on the other hand, target a win which would put them on level points with Valletta.

The Maroons lost 1-2 to Sliema in their last league outing and were then eliminated by Hamrun from the FA Trophy. Therefore they are eager to bounce back with a positive result against the Citizens. Valletta are unbeaten in seven league matches, having defeated leaders Floriana in their last league outing. They elimated Senglea from the FA Trophy, beating them 2-0.

Meanwhile in the first match, St. Andrews face Tarxien Rainbows in a clash between the two teams lying joint-second from bottom on seven points.

The Rainbows are coming from five successive league defeats although they managed to beat Swieqi United 3-0 in the FA Trophy third round. The Saints, on the other hand, lost five out of the last six matches and were eliminated by Sliema Wanderers in the FA Trophy.

St. Andrews could not count on the suspended Ricardo Martin.
