Early goals sink Greens

Birkirkara scored twice in the first seventeen minutes to beat Floriana 2-0 at the National Stadium on Sunday.

This was the third win on the trot for Paul Zammit’s side as Birkirkara now lie just one point behind Hamrun and two behind Hibs and Sliema. Floriana, on the other hand, are still fourth, five points behind leaders Balzan, but this defeat was the second one in three league games.

Birkirkara forged ahead on the 11th minute when off an assist by Bruno Andrade Fernandes de Brito from the left, Jake Grech slotted the ball past Ini Etim Akpan.

On the 17th minute, the Stripes doubled the score when Ryan Scicluna served Luke Montebello who controlled the ball and rounded a defender before hittin the ball in the top right corner.

During the second half, Floriana had their fair share of scoring opportunities and Maurizio Vella was first unlucky to hit the crossbar with a freekick on the 50th minute and then with a powerful shot which hit the upright.
