BOV Division 1: Mqabba beat Pietà to move second

A goal by Paul Chimezie after just four minutes handed Mqabba a sixth consecutive win as they beat Pietà Hotspurs 1-0 in a direct clash for second place in the BOV First Division on Tuesday.

Clive Mizzi’s side move to just one point behind Qormi, who however have a game in hand.

Vittoriosa close in on the top three with a 2-1 win over Zejtun Corinthians at the Centenary Stadium. For Zejtun, this was the second consecutive defeat after two draws in the previous two outings. Joseph Jojo Ogunnupe put the Stars ahead on the 5th minute and although Filippo Andrea Scozzese equalised on the 17th, Ogunnupe restored the lead eight minutes in the second half. Zejtun missed a late penalty thanks to which they could have levelled matters.

Pembroke Athleta defeated Marsa 3-1 in another match at the Centenary Staduum. Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza opened the score on the 33rd. Igor Misan made it 2-0 on the 79th and four minutes later, Mifsud Triganza added another. Jurgen Gerada converted a penalty to reduce the gap for Marsa deep into stoppage time.

In another match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Sirens and Zebbug Rangers shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Francesco Gusman gave Zebbug the lead on theh 29th and Daniel Agius equalised on the 46th.

Qormi lead the way with 26 points, followed by Mqabba on 25, Pietà 24, Vittoriosa 21, Zebbug 18, Sirens and Zejtun 17, San Gwann 16, Qrendi 13, Melita 11, Zabbar 10, Pembroke and Marsa 7 and Rabat 4. Pembroke had ten points deducted.
