Valletta all out to regain top spot

Valletta will be all out to regain top spot to regain the top spot in the BOV Premier League as they take on Hamrun Spartans in one of the two matches in programme on Sunday at the National Stadium.

The Citizens are currently second, one point behind leaders Balzan, and therefore a win would enable them to take full advantage of Balzan’s slip on Saturday and move two points clear. Valletta are unbeaten in ten matches and are coming from three successive wins over Tarxien, Hibernians and St. Andrews.

The Spartans lie in a comfortable mid-table position and have no particular objective to play for. They won three out of the last four matches, losing 2-3 to Sliema Wanderers in their last outing.

In the first round, Hamrun held Valletta in a goaless draw.

Meanwhile in the first match, Sliema Wanderers and Floriana cross swords in the Old Firm derby.

The Greens are currently sixth on 41 points, two ahead of Sliema. But while the Wanderers still stand a chance to make it to the UEFA Europa League through the FA Trophy, Floriana can only make it by placing third. Something which is not that easy considering that third-placed Gzira United lie four points ahead of Birkirkara, six ahead of Hibernians and seven ahead of the Greens.

Floriana are unbeaten in six matches, conceding just one goal in a draw with Balzan. Sliema, on the other hand, won the last three matches against Hibs, St. Andrews and Hamrun.

In the first round, Floriana registered a narrow 1-0 win over Sliema.
