BOV Premier League title at stake on Saturday

The BOV Premier League title will be at stake on Saturday as the last four matches from match day 26 will be played simultaneously at four different venues.

Valletta take on Gzira United at the National Stadium, Balzan face Hibernians at the Hibernians Stadium, Birkirkara meet Hamrun Spartans at the Centenary Stadium while Floriana take on Lija Athletic at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Valletta and Balzan share the top spot with 55 points and in their final match, they face Gzira United and Hibernians respectively. Both Valletta and Balzan need a win and that the other team fails to win. In case both teams win or both teams are held in draws, a decider would be necessary.

The Citizens are unbeaten in twelve matches and were coming from four consecutive wins before last week’s draw with Floriana. Balzan, on the other hand, bounced back from the shock defeat to Tarxien with a narrow win over Senglea Athletic last week.

Gzira United are sure of third place but Hibernians are still engaged in the battle for fourth place which could mean a place in the UEFA Europa League should Balzan or Valletta win the FA Trophy. Hibs are currently fifth on 43 points, on level points with Floriana, one behind Birkirkara.

Birkirkara would take fourth place should they beat Hamrun while a draw would be enough should both Floriana and Hibernians fail to beat Lija Athletic and Balzan respectively. In case of a draw for Birkirkara, a win for either Floriana and Hibs would put the winner in fourth place. If both Floriana and Hibs win and Birkirkara fail to win, Floriana and Hibernians would end their commitments in fourth place and a decider would be necessary if the fourth-placed team would qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

In the first round, Gzira defeated Valletta 2-1, Balzan beat Hibernians 1-0, Birkirkara registered a narrow 1-0 win overr Hamrun while Floriana hit six past Lija.
