Gearing up for the Champions League First Qualifying Round

Teams like Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona are some of the biggest names in European football and are undoubtedly household names, however, there are some less well-known names who also play a part in Europe’s premier club competition, the UEFA Champions League.

In the first qualifying round, teams from a whole host of European countries take part in order to begin their journey to the group stage and with it a chance to be among the Champions League betting. There is also the chance of playing against some of the best clubs and best players on offer in European football.

In this season’s Champions League, Maltese Premier League club Hibernians took on Estonia’s FCI Tallinn. Hibernians won the home leg of the tie 2-0, thanks to goals from Brazilian striker Jorginho and Maltese midfielder Bjorn Kristensen. The club then travelled to Estonia for the away leg, where they managed to walk away with a 1-0 win courtesy of Jorginho, giving Hibernians a 3-0 aggregate win and allowing them to advance through to the second round. In the second round Hibernians faced a much more formidable opponent in the form of Austrian Bundesliga club Salzburg. They were unable to defeat their Austrian opponents and fell to a 6-0 aggregate defeat, however their opponents have proven to be good in Europe, having reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

This summer champions Valletta will be in the first qualifying round draw with Ludogorets Razgrad, Celtic, FK Astana, Garabag Agdam, BATE Borisov, Sheriff Tiraspol, Malmö FF, Red Star Belgrade, Rosenborg BK, HJK Helsinki, The New Saints, Shkendija Tetovo, Víkingur, Crusaders Belfast, Sutjeska Niksic, Suduva Marijampole, Cork City, Spartaks Jurmala, Valur Reykjavik, Flora Tallinn and Torpedo Kutaisi along with the champions of Cyprus, Denmark, Israel, Poland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Albania, Luxembourg, Armenia and the two teams who will qualify from the Preliminary Round.
