Gżira, Hibernians continue battle on top

Joint-leaders Gżira United and Hibernians continue the battle on top the BOV Premier League table as they take on Tarxien Rainbows and Pietà Hotspurs respectively at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Saturday.

In the first match, kick-off at 14:00, Pietà hope to end their negative run which saw them lose the last three matches against Tarxien, Hamrun and Sliema. Their last win dates back October 26 as this was followed by draws with Gzira and St. Andrews. The Hotspurs are currently third from bottom on ten points.

Hibernians, on the other hand, are unbeaten in nine matches thanks to eight wins and a draw with Balzan in their last outing.

The first round clash ended in a 2-1 win for Hibs.

In the second match, kick-off at 16:15, Gżira United will be aiming at extending their unbeaten run to fourteen matches with a win over Tarxien Rainbows. The Maroons won just two out of the last five games, being held in draws by Pietà, Valletta and Mosta. Against Tarxien, they simply cannot dropping any points.

Tarxien, on the other hand, are currently tenth on 15 points. They lost three out of the last four matches, suffering fourteen goals in the process against Balzan, Valletta and Floriana and scoring none in the last two.

Juan Cruz Gill could make his debut for the Rainbows after joining the club from Valletta. Andre Scicluna, however, serves a one-match ban. Gżira, on the other hand, could field new recruits Justin Mengolo and Sofian Domoraud.

In the first round, Gżira defeated Tarxien 4-1.
