Tarxien hold Gżira in 1-1 draw

Gżira United fall second in the BOV Premier League after being held in a 1-1 draw by Tarxien Rainbows at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Saturday. A draw which allows Hibernians to take sole leadership, two points ahead of the Maroons.

For Gżira, this was the fourth draw in six matches. Tarxien, on the other hand, earn a positive result after two heavy defeats which saw them conceding eleven goals in all and scoring none against Valletta and Floriana.

The Maroons had three changes from their last outing as Roderick Briffa, Sacha Borg and new signing Justin Mengolo replaced Zachary Scerri, Jorginho and Thomas Veronese. Jorginho has now joined Birkirkara and Veronese is expected to join Tarxien.

For Tarxien, Marco Botta, Daniel Zerafa,Darren Falzon and Jacson de Paixao were preferred to Jens Wemmer, Andrew Agius and Alex Nilsson while Andre Scicluna was ruled out through suspension.

Early in the game, both sides could have taken the lead but Radovanovic first and Corbalan later hit the posts.

The match, however, came to life in the final ten minutes as Andrew Cohen put the Maroons ahead on the 80th minute, heading the ball home off a cross by Juan Carlos Corbalan.

However one minute in added time, Daren Falzon notched the equaliser for Tarxien, placing the ball at the back of the net following a corner.
