Stripes maintain six-point lead ahead of second phase

Birkirkara maintained their six-point lead over Mġarr United after both teams won on the final day of the first phase of the BOV Women’s League.

Teams will now be divided into two sections – Birkirkara, Mgarr United, Hibernians and Kirkop United in Section A, Swieqi United, Raiders (Luxol), Mosta and Fgura United in Section B.

Birkirkara wrapped up their phase one commitments with a 2-0 win over Kirkop United at the Charles Abela Stadium. Goal in each half from Stephania Farrugia after five minutes and a 62nd-minute goal from Raina Giusti sealed the Stripes win.

At the Charles Abela Stadium, Haley Bugeja’s burst of quality helped the Mgarr United secure a vital 2-0 win over Mosta. Bugeja scored twice in a span of two minutes between the 75th and 77th minute to keep the Greens in second place.

Goals from Nicole Borg on the 20th minute and a 66th-minute goal from Shona Zammit helped Hibernians to keep track of Mgarr United, as they are in third place, five points distant from the Greens, defeating Swieqi United 2-0 at the Mgarr Ground.

Meanwhile in a thrilling encounter at the Mgarr Ground, Raiders (Luxol) got the better of Fgura United with the odd goal in seven. All seven goals were scored in the second 45 minutes, making up for a stalemate first-half.

Fgura forged ahead on the 47th minute through Aleksandra Marinkovic. She doubled the score four minutes later, to put the Reds two goals ahead. Raiders staged a reaction and levelled terms through an Emma Ciantar Piccinino’s brace on the 53rd and 72nd minute.

Therese Briffa’s goal on the 76th minute cancelled out Raiders’s lead who went 3-2 up just a minute before through Leanne Micallef. On the 77th minute, Piccinino sent Raiders ahead once again as they saw the game through to claim the win.
