BOV Division 1: Sirens secure historic promotion to Premier League

Sirens FC secured a historic promotion to the Premier League as they celebrate the club’s fiftieth anniversary after defeating Mqabba 4-0 at the Victor Stadium on Wednesday. A win which puts them six points clear of Gudja United and sixteen points ahead of Santa Lucia and Naxxar Lions.

Angel Manuel Bustos put Sirens ahead on the 28th minute and just past the hour, Luka Mijic doubled the score. John Nwoba converted a penalty to make it 3-0 on the 78th with Mattia Del Negro adding another in added time.

Gudja United will have to wait at least until the weekend to make sure of promotion after being held in a 2-2 draw by third-placed Santa Lucia in another match at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Luis Diego Mosquera Segura put Santa Lucia on the 28th and five minutes in the second half, Jackson de Lima Siqueira converted a penalty to level matters. Luis Diego Mosquera Segura made it 2-1 for Santa Lucia on the 54th but Raphael Alain Kooh Sohna equalised a minute later.

At the Centenary Stadium, Naxxar Lions defeated Pembroke Athleta 2-1 to join Santa Lucia in third place. Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos put Pembroke ahead on the 39th but Jurgen Debono equalised just before half-time, notching the winner five minutes in the second half.

On the other hand, goals by Shawn Darmanin on the 36th and 43rd and Jose Lucas Caetano da Silva two minutes from time handed Zebbug Rangers a 3-0 win over San Gwann.

Sirens lead the way on 52 points, followed by Gudja on 46, Santa Lucia and Naxxar 36, Swieqi and Zebbug 33, Pembroke 32, Lija 31, Mqabba 28, Zejtun and Vittoriosa 27, Qrendi 20, San Gwann 19 and Marsa 5.
