BOV Division 1: Sirens move closer to championship

Sirens moved to just one point away from the BOV First Division championship after defeating second-placed Gudja United 2-1 in a top-of-the-table clash at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Saturday.

Ratko Mandic put Sirens ahead on the 37th minute and although Raphael Kooh Sohna equalised on the 9th minute, Russell Fenech made it 2-1 three minutes from time.

In another match, Qrendi moved seven points clear of San Gwann after defeating Lija Athletic 3-2.

Following a goalless first half, Ciro Quaranta converted a penalty eight minutes in the second half and five minutes later, Luca Brincat doubled the score. Erjon Beu scored twice for Lija on 59 and 61 minutes to restore equilibrium but Bjorn Bondin made it 3-2 for Qrendi on the 65th.

Sirens lead the way on 55 points, followed by Gudja on 49, Santa Lucia 39, Naxxar 36, Pembroke 35, Lija and Swieqi 34, Zebbug 33, Mqabba 31, Zejtun and Vittoriosa 27, Qrendi 26, San Gwann 19 and Marsa 5.
