Vittoriosa Stars retained their Division 1 status after defeating Mgarr United, who placed third in the BOV Second Division, 3-2 after extra-time in the BOV First Division Play-Off at the Victor Tedesco Stadium on Sunday.

Mgarr United will therefore play once again in Division 2 next season.

Joseph JoJo Ogunnupe put Vittoriosa ahead on the 19th minute but goals by Jake Davis on the 53rd and Aaron Sammut on the 57th turned the score in Mgarr’s favour. However Ogunnupe restored equilibrium on the 59th. The Stars were then reduced to ten men after having Andreas Galea sent off.

With the score still draw, the game went into extra-time and one minute from the end of the first half of extra-time, Joseph JoJo Ogunnupe converted a penalty to make it 3-2 for Vittoriosa.

Vittoriosa Stars were awarded another penalty on the 120th minute but Dario Tabone’s effort from the penalty spot was neutralised by the Mgarr goalkeeper. Jean Paul Grima was sent off for Mgarr.
